SWR used IO [io] 8001 for audio & video monitoring over WLAN at the biggest German rock festival

Munich, July 10th, 2008: German public broadcaster SWR3 used a pair of MAYAH IO [io] 8001 for live video networking over WLAN/Wi-Fi during Germany’s biggest live rock festival Rock am Ring. It takes place annually at the Nürburger Ring which is one of two Formula 1 races tracks in Germany. This year Rock am Ring gathered 85.000 visitors and 98 bands including Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, The Offspring, Die Toten Hosen, Motörhead, The Prodigy, Bad Religion and many more. TV production unit of MTV Germany provided extensive reports and live transmissions from the main stage, while the regional public broadcaster SWR3 was entirely responsible for the ‘Alterna Stage’.

Rock am Ring

Staying at the production facility of the ‘Alterna Stage” the journalists of SWR still required a real-time access to the sound and picture from the main stage for their reports and organization. So an extremely cost-efficient solution of transmitting audio and video as one IP stream over a broadband wireless data connection for monitoring purposes was quite successful on site. And minor packet losses occurred due to the nature of a common Wi-Fi technology utilized in a typical busy RF environment of a big show just couldn’t put the journalists’ work at risk. No additional cables must have been laid, technicians’ work has been saved too. SWR engineers used a Cisco Integrated Services Router with additional WLAN equipment on one side and a simple Netgear WLAN Router on the other. With the huge data bandwidth of 54 Mbit/s available it was quite easy to transmit high quality SD video with up to 3 Mbit/s and 256 Kbit/s audio.
