MDR1 Radio uses CENTAURI II for daily live reports over Satellite

Regional public station in Germany MDR1 Radio Sachsen-Anhalt goes Audio-over-IP on a daily basis with MAYAH codecs and GE subsidiary Satlynx

Munich, 20 February 2009:
MDR1 Radio Sachsen-Anhalt now uses a new remote van to bring their audience live news right from their neighborhood. The system integrator Media & Communication Systems (MCS) Sachsen-Anhalt constructed the single user operated remote van on a basis of the Volkswagen Golf Plus. The car is equipped with Satlynx satellite system providing fully automatic antenna tracking and service activation. IP-over-Sat connection is to a public Internet gateway. Audio is encoded and transmitted with MAYAH Centauri II Audio Codecs.

No technician required to start up or configure the system, so MDR1 reporters mostly driving alone through the region. The remote van is also equipped with a small Yellowtec Intellimix digital mixing console, as well as with the laptop for DAW operations. Wireless microphone and talkback system from Sennheiser allows the reporter to reach out for up to 200 meters distance from the van. The entire remote system can operate up to 10 hours without 220V power connection.

MDR

During a live transmission the signal is encoded by MAYAH codec with MPEG-2 Layer 3 at 80 kbps mono and transmitted via the reserved satellite channel to the teleport station of Satlynx where it is passed through to a public Internet gateway and routed to another MAYAH Centauri II which is installed at the MDR1 Studio in Magdeburg. This codec is connected to the Internet via high quality SDSL line with fixed IP address and thus is easily reachable from the outside.

With a quite affordable flat-rate for data communication offered by the satellite operator MDR1 Radio Sachsen-Anhalt could significantly raise the number of live contributions and the ad hoc reports even from the farthest corners of the region. The “Hörmobil” of the public broadcaster is touring the roads of the region in the Central Germany at least 4-5 days in a week.
