IO 8001 delivers audio & video for Internet-Streaming of 3sat TV |
For several years already there is a live Internet streaming from the stand of 3sat and ZDF TV channels at the Frankfurt Book Fair (Frankfurter Buchmesse) available. Special department for program transmission & streaming services of ZDF, the second channel of German Television, is in charge for this type of signal distribution. Conversations with and readings by the authors, which regularly take place throughout the Book Fair period, can be obtained over the Internet either as live streams or as Video-on-Demand files in various media formats.
Exactly those different formats and qualities require a flexible and first of all affordable solution for the signal delivery, since Internet-Streams are normally a low-budget productions. In the year 2007 at the exhibition Stand of 3sat there was an SDI-infrastructure organized. The signals were obtained from 4 cameras, several other sources and were mixed in a Videomixer. The ready signal with an embedded audio was then fed to the MAYAH IO [io] 8001 Encoder over the SDI interface. Transmission was organized using a VPN-based connection over the 2 Mbit/s E1 Route, right into the ZDF LAN in their broadcasting centre in Mainz, about 35 km away from the fair grounds. Another IO [io] 8001 used as a decoder and connected to an audio video matrix of the ZDF facility provided the local video infrastructure with the decoded signal. For production of the live streams in a Real Media and Windows Media formats the signal from the IO [io] was switched to the corresponding Live Encoders. For production of the Video-on-Demand files the signal was saved to the Avid Unity infrastructure of ZDF and after being tailored with Avid Newscutter the mxf files went to their own encoding farm. Delivery from the Exhibition Hall in Frankfurt to the ZDF Headquarters in Mainz was based on a 1,6 Mbit/s MPEG-4 payload with D1 PAL resolution. The comparatively easy picture composition of a typical studio conversation against the static background allowed the high picture quality at those very low bitrates. Afterwards ZDF have tested the IO [io] en/decoders using the H.264 mode, what has brought even further improvements of the picture quality. „Basically this kind of transmission provides a secure source of a satisfactory picture quality for internet streaming. Integration of the MAYAH IO [io] units into existing infrastructures has also worked comparatively unobstructed”, said Markus Forst from the ZDF department for program transmission & streaming services.
About IO [io] 8000/8001 MPEG-4 H.264/AVC Audio Video En/Decoder: The new IO [io] 8000/8001 is aimed for a broad application range: from MobileTV (DVB-H / DMB) to STL, SNG and further distribution applications. It provides an IP data stream of a highest compatibility thanks to its full ISMA 2.0 compliance. The strictly standards-based MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 coding algorithm, secures the highest possible picture quality at any bit rates and resolutions from QCIF up to full D1 PAL or NTSC. For absolutely reliable links IO [io] provides such useful features as automatic re-connect and re-sync. Optional feature for transmission with MPEG TS / FEC, either over IP/RTP or ASI makes the IO [io] an extremely flexible tool for various broadcasting applications.
